Emergency Response Solutions: StreetSmart Chemistry

Sponsoring Agency: DoD/Department of the Army/Joint Interagency Training and Education Center (JITEC)/WVNG & Chemours

Course Length: 3 training days (24.0 hours)
Course Delivery: Residential Training
Course Level: Respond
Continuing Education Units: 2.4

Course Description:
This course is somewhat different from most “chemistry” classes in that the objective is to train Responders to Hazardous Material Incidents to recognize and understand the chemical and physical hazards associated with the materials present and to take the appropriate protective actions to prevent personal injuries and to minimize property and environmental damage. This course is not intended to cover the same material as a college chemistry class but is more practical in its approach. Some theoretical concepts and topics covered in college chemistry classes are not covered in this course due to their lack of relevance to “real-world” incidents. The course uses a mixture of slides, videos, classroom exercises and hands-on demonstrations to teach the students the hazards associated with different classes of compounds.
